Consultations

Gastroenterology is a branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its disorders. It  deal with disorders of the oesophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, rectum and pancreas. At Dr Gastroenterology, our doctors are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of all gastroenterological conditions with a wealth of experience underlying their daily clinical work.

Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy is an examination of the inside of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. It is performed by using a thin, flexible fibre-optic instrument that is passed through the mouth and allows the doctor to see whether there is any damage to the lining of the oesophagus (gullet) or stomach, and whether there are any ulcers present. Conditions such as coeliac disease can also be diagnosed by gastroscopy.

Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy or coloscopy is the endoscopic examination of the large bowel and the distal part of the small bowel with a fiber optic camera on a flexible tube passed through the bottom. It can provide a visual diagnosis (e.g. ulceration, polyps) and grants the opportunity for biopsy or removal of suspected colorectal cancers and polyps. Hemorrhoids can also be banded after a colonoscopic procedure.

Hepatology/Liver Disease

Hepatology is the branch of medicine that incorporates the study of liver, gallbladder and biliary tree as well as management of their disorders. Our doctors are experienced in the follow up of abnormal liver function tests as well as the treatment of conditions such as autoimmune hepatitis, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.

Capsule endoscopy (Pill Cam)

Capsule endoscopy is a procedure requiring the patient to swallow a miniature and wireless pill sized camera. This camera is used to record images of the digestive tract with particular focus on the small bowel. The Australian Government subsidises this procedure only after a gastroscopy and colonoscopy has been done. At Dr Gastroenterology we have successfully performed numerous capsule endoscopies with no adverse events recorded.

Hydrogen/Methane breath testing

Our Ability to tolerate certain foods is largely dependent on the bacterial flora in our gut. Hydrogen and Methane Breath Tests are useful, inexpensive and safe diagnostic tests which help to measure the health and diversity of these gut microbes and evaluate common food intolerances and persistent gastrointestinal upsets.

Dr. Gastroenterology can accept open access referrals for this service.

Urease breath testing (H Pylori)

A urease breath test tests for the presence of helicobacter pylori – a cancer causing bacteria and common source of gastric irritation and acid problems. This bacteria is very common and can often infect your stomach from a very young age, problematic only later in life. Our state-of-the-art machine allows point of care testing for this bacteria and can provide a ready result within 20 minutes allowing same day testing and treatment.
Dr. Gastroenterology can accept open access referrals for this service at a bulk billed, no out of pocket cost level when accompanied by a suitable GP referral.

Esophageal Impedance-pH Study

An ambulatory esophageal 24 hour pH study is an outpatient test that measures the amount of acid or non-acid reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus. The sensors placed in the esophagus measure acid concentration which corresponds to acidic reflux and impedance which corresponds to non-acid reflux. You will wear a data recorder during the test and record symptomatic episodes. Symptoms will be analysed for any correlation to episodes of reflux.

Iron Infusion

Iron is an essential nutrient for your body. It is an important part of haemoglobin (Hb), the red pigment which gives blood its colour and which carries oxygen around your body. You need iron so your body can make new haemoglobin and red blood cells to carry the oxygen your body requires. Therefore, it is very important to have enough iron in your blood.
